Layered Storytelling

Drawing from her unique background working in climate change and conservation, Colorado-based artist and environmental and wildlife activist, Katherine Homes curated the art for Populus by thoughtfully handpicking artists that give a voice to the wild and remind us just how connected we all are.

Brent Learned

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Brent Learned is an award-winning American Indian artist who is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne - Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. He has always appreciated the heritage and culture of the Plains Indians, which is reflected in his artwork as he captures the essence, accuracy, and historical authenticity of the Plains Indian way of life. His acrylic paintings are bold and bright and instantly attract attention. Brent’s work resides in museums such as the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, The University of Kansas Art Museum in Lawrence, Kansas and the Cheyenne/Arapaho Museum in Clinton, Oklahoma. He also has work in private collections such as the Kerr Foundation and the Governor of Oklahoma’s Mansion in Oklahoma City.

Douglas Atwill is a prolific acrylic painter, capturing a range of subjects from the towering mesas of New Mexico to dense Colorado forests,  and most famously, bright midday scenes from his own gardens. His work highlights the constant movement of light, water, and wind, and evokes the personal connection to the vibrant natural world around him.

Sam's artistic signature lies in her photo-realistic renderings, employing meticulous pen and ink hatching and cross-hatching techniques to bring her hiking trails and travel memories to life on paper. Her illustrations serve not only as visual representations but also as vessels for sharing the emotional resonance of the places she holds dear.

Matthew Rucker

Minneapolis, Minnesota
Matthew Rucker paints in response to the chaotic world we live in. His style is hyperminimalist (hyperrealism + minimalism)  that embrace simplicity, lightness and tranquility. These paintings are designed to be easy on both the eye and the mind and emerge as a result of his own search for peace. He is severely colorblind and see’s about 1% of the colors most people can see. He instead feels color on an emotional level. The colors are mixed on a palette until the color feels right.

Logan Wannamaker

Durango, Colorado
Logan grew up in Durango, Colorado and moved to Taos, New Mexico in 2006. He has been working in clay for the past 16 years. The majority of his work is fired in wood and soda kilns. Many of the clays, inclusions and pigments are locally sourced.
